History
Program Overview
The History Department seeks to educate students about the most important historical concepts, facts, and interpretations pertinent to a range of regions and time periods. In so doing, the History Program endeavors to inspire among its students a life-long intellectual curiosity that will foster their future personal and professional growth.
Mission
Flowing from the Mission of the University, the SEU History Department's Mission is to provide a curriculum that fosters students' understanding of the past, in the expectation that this knowledge will enhance their comprehension of present and future events, conditions, and trends.
By developing among students the writing, speaking, critical thinking, and research skills developed by the study of history, the Department prepares future graduates for a wide range of occupational callings.
The History Department also strives to underscore, through faculty-student interpretation of many historical examples, the imperative need for individuals and communities alike to act with integrity and a sense of social responsibility, under the auspices of leadership that advances the greater good.
Goals

Student Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate a broad-based knowledge of history.
- Demonstrate the analytical-reasoning skills needed to evaluate historical material.
- Demonstrate the writing skills needed to communicate effectively about historical topics.
- Demonstrate the research skills needed to produce substantive papers on historical topics.
- Demonstrate the ability to speak effectively about historical subjects.
- Apply the skills acquired from the History Program to post-collegiate endeavors, such as graduate school and employment.
Graduates
Students who graduate with a History major have obtained skills that make them well-prepared for post-collegiate life. Recent SEU History majors have begun careers in education, library work, government service, and business.
Other recent History graduates have pursued graduate study at such institutions as Rutgers University, Seton Hall University, Drew University, Monmouth University, New York University, and the New School for Social Research. Still other History graduates have attended Seton Hall University School of Law, Thomas M. Cooley Law School, and Quinnipiac University School of Law.
