Program Overview
The minor in Spanish encourage students to achieve proficiency in the language to converse with educated native speakers and to develop their full potential and control of the language. The program offers quality instruction that reflects the increasingly interdependent and global nature of culture, knowledge and the world in the 21st century, as well as the growing inter-connectedness of peoples and places in the local, regional, national, and global communities.
Students pursuing a minor in Spanish are encouraged to demonstrate an understanding of linguistic Spanish structures as well as to appreciate the meaning of specific metaphors, symbols, and key terms that inform Hispanic culture.
The minor in Spanish is dedicated to offering instruction and learning opportunities to prepare students for diverse situations in which Spanish will be the language of communication. We inspire our students to question their cultural assumptions about the Hispanic world, and to seek to immerse themselves, as much as possible, in a Spanish-speaking community.
Outcomes
- Students will have the ability to express themselves using interpersonal communication by interacting and negotiating meaning in spoken or written conversations in Spanish to share diverse information.
- Students will be able to understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics using their Spanish skills.
- Students will engage in presentation of information and ideas to inform, explain, persuade, and narrate on a variety of topics.
- Students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in the discussion and basic analysis of cultural and literary issues in Spain and Latin America.
- Students will acquire competency in the four language skills (reading, writing, speaking and comprehension) at an intermediate-high level or above
Graduates
Our graduates are equipped to pursue careers in education, business, law, international studies, and journalism; and to work with international corporations, international service organizations, and non-profit organizations with local/global agendas and responsibilities.
