SOC305 Social Welfare Programs, Policies, & Issues

This course provides an overview of how social welfare policy has evolved in the United States. The course will consider how social workers can use current policies and programs to improve individual well-being. Students will reflect on how current policies have been shaped by social, economic, political, and philosophical forces on how this directly impacts clients and client systems. Legislative processes of policy making will be reviewed, and methods of influencing policy making process will be explored focusing on social work advocacy. Students will learn how social workers can engage in effective advocacy so that social welfare programs are more consistent with social work values.
