SW230 Mental Health Treat. Appr. and Self-care

This course will be divided into two sections. The first half of this course will explore the history of mental health services and different theories on the causes of mental health. It will discuss crisis, trauma, disasters, the impact of post-traumatic stress, adverse childhood experiences, vicarious trauma, burnout. This course will discss the various rolls helping professionals play in the mental health system along with exploring different treatment approaches. The second half of this course will explore current and emerging treatment techniques and coping skills in responding to mental health issues and reducing stress. Students will take a practical and self-reflective approach in learning how to utilize different coping skills for self-care, and as helping professionals. Satisfies Outcome 9 of the General Education Curriculum.
