ENG120 The Reading Life
Educated people through the ages have appreciated the importance of a rich and varied reading life. This course seeks to deepen and broaden students’ experiences with texts, across all genres, both classic and contemporary, and through a wide variety of themes, voices, lengths, etc., that will cultivate the skills necessary for complex thought, critical judgment, and a habit of lifelong reading. A major focus will be how reading can help students understand human history for the purpose of understanding our present, and, in turn, their own experience and cultural assumptions. In this course, students will become active and engaged readers by learning how to recognize and examine the ideas, values, opinions, and beliefs of diverse cultures and geographical contexts.
