ENG203 Creative Writing
An introduction to the practice and pleasure of writing short stories, poems and other creative pieces including blogs, marketing pieces, product development, travel pieces, flash fiction, monologues, etc. Emphasis is placed upon using metaphor and other conventions of the craft, resisting cliché, trusting the reader, and valuing the revision process. Through both class discussions and individual close reading analysis of craft, students will deepen their understanding of literary texts and oral readings / performances (live and recorded) across genres and will then apply these understandings to their own creative writing. Students will create a portfolio / chapbook of their work, submit to the University’s literary magazine, and participate in at least one on-campus reading of their work. 3 credits Meets Gen. Ed.
