Preset Freshmen and Sophomore Pathways

To ensure that students begin and remain on track in terms of graduation and degree requirements, and to maximize student opportunities to add minors or second majors, and therefore increase their options after graduation, the College has designed the Preset Freshmen and Sophomore Pathways.

This curricular sequencing model, which outlines all the courses taken in the first two years, will allow students to complete 75% to 90% of their General Education requirements during just their freshman and sophomore years, as well as all foundational gateway and milestone courses, both in their intended major, and in other complementary majors and minors that they may want to consider.

Students will then be able to focus their junior and senior years almost entirely on their major, as well as on potential minors or second majors.

Simply put, this curricular sequencing model allows students to get the most out of their undergraduate education at CSE.

Capstone Requirement

Capstone Experience: an exam is given in two parts on two separate dates. The first day of the exam includes objective questions that consist of multiple choice questions covering Fundamentals of Biology I and II, Microbiology and Cell Biology. In addition, a separate exam section covers basic solution calculations. The second day consists of essay questions in upper level elective courses specific to the B.S. program.

Sufficient Progress in the Major

  • Students must have passed BIO111 and BIO113 with a grade of C+ or better in order to continue as a biology major in their sophomore year.
  • Students must pass, with a grade of C or better, BIO209, BIO251, CHEM151, CHEM153 (and all of their respective labs), MATH151 and MATH153 or MATH119 prior to the start of fall semester of the junior year to continue as a biology major.
  • Students in the B.A biology degree program must have passed all of the above courses as well as BIO303 and at least one upper-level biology elective – all with a grade of C or better – prior to the start of the fall semester of the senior year to continue as a biology major.
  • In addition, students in the B.S. biology degree program must have passed all of the above courses as well as BIO303, CHEM211 and CHEM213 and at least one upper-level biology elective – all with a grade of C or better – prior to the start of the fall semester of the senior year to continue as a biology major.
