B.A./M.A. in Communication Dual Degree Program

Program Overview

The combined B.A./M.A. Program in Communication consists of both SEU undergraduate courses and FDU graduate courses. SEU Communication students admitted into the Program will be required to take nine specified credits of FDU graduate courses during their senior undergraduate year, which will count towards satisfying the degree requirements of their FDU degree.

  • MCOM6001: Principles and Practices of Communication – to replace SEU's COMM405: Communication Law or COMM410: Communication History
  • MCOM6002: Professional Writing and Editing – to replace SEU's COMM355: Editing for Converging Media
  • MCOM6003: Presentation Methods – to replace SEU's COMM351: Principles of Persuasion

The M.A. coursework typically takes one extra school year, including one summer or winter session course. This structure will provide students who enroll in the Program on a full-time basis the ability to complete the Program in five years.

Program Admission

FDU, in consultation with the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at SEU, shall make decisions concerning admission of students to the Program based on the criteria noted below, which were established by the Becton College of Arts and Sciences. SEU shall make determinations concerning student eligibility for financial aid and the allocation of financial aid to students for the undergraduate portion of the Program, including the final undergraduate semester when students will be taking FDU graduate courses at FDU's Florham Campus.

  • Students in the Bachelor of Arts in Communication at SEU are eligible to apply to the Program.
  • Students cannot be considered for admission to the Program until they have completed at least 60 credits of undergraduate coursework with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher (out of 4.0).
  • By the end of their junior year, students applying for admission to the five-year B.A./M.A. program are required to submit a completed FDU application (the FDU application fee is waived), personal statement, unofficial transcript, and two letters of recommendation to the M.A. Program Director. Applications are reviewed by the faculty of the FDU Department of Communication Studies and applicants for the five-year program are interviewed by the Director of the M.A. Program.
  • The senior undergraduate year of study in the Program is a qualifying year. Students must earn a B grade or better in each of the three required classes in order to qualify for the graduate year. Failure to earn B grades or better in each required class means that the student will not be allowed to continue into the graduate year. Instead, the student will graduate at the end of the senior year with a B.A. in Communication, issued by SEU.

Tuition and Fees

Undergraduate students enrolled in the program will be registered and billed at SEU for the term. SEU will pay FDU for the graduate courses that the undergraduate students are enrolled in at FDU. FDU shall bill SEU for the graduate courses at the undergraduate published per credit rate, assessed to students who are not subject to the flat rate of tuition at FDU.

SEU will receive a 40% discount off the per credit rate for the term. Payment shall be made to FDU by SEU by the ninth week of each Fall/Spring term.

Once matriculated as graduate students at FDU, students admitted into the Program will be awarded a tuition scholarship by FDU equivalent to 40% of the Tier 2 graduate tuition rate that is in effect during that particular academic year; such scholarship shall be applied against the student's FDU tuition.
